Arena 1
Faye Ludlow and Cloneyhea Clancy were off to a flying start, opening Arena 1 with the Mears Flooring Ladies’ Side Saddle class. 10-year-old Clancy [Cloneyhea Clancy] had a showing career in Ireland, before making the move over here in 2019, and this is his first HOYS qualification – well worth the trip up from Lincolnshire. Lynn Russell and Starfall followed taking second place.
The Harrod & Coles Family Lightweight Cob class saw success for Charlotte Alford and Silver Woods as they took the winning spot. Their success continued into the championship where they were named Reserve Cob Champions. Faye Helliwell and Real Steel took second place.
Justine Armstrong Small and 6-year-old Hortons Magnifico were victorious in The Harrod & Coles Family Heavyweight Cob class. Hortons Magnifico, known as Paddington Bear at home, is described by Justine as being: “Captain Chaos at home. Everything goes in his mouth before being flung out of the door!” Justine went on to say he: “was really good – he went so nicely for the judge”, and this is Bear’s first HOYS qualification. Second place was awarded to Natasha Dolman and Hortons Happygolucky.
The Cob Champions were found in The Leeman Family Maxi Cob class in the form of Danielle Heath and Brookdale Grand Edition, who won both the class and the championship. Tina Billingsley and The Grey Goose were pulled in second.
Kirsty Pickles and Roseberry Super Trooper had a successful day, winning the Mears Flooring Small Hack, before going on to be named Reserve Hack Champion. They were followed in second place by Daisy Darby riding Bankswood Savoir Faire.
The Culford Lodge Commodities Large Hack class saw Bronte Hatton Ritchie crowned the winner, riding 12-year-old Holly Creek Sir Benson, known as Benson at home. The pair came down from Blackpool to gain their HOYS qualification, and have also come away with the Hack Champion title. When describing Benson Bronte said: “He is a good boy, he’s definitely the favourite at home and loves a scratch. I hunt him too, he jumps absolutely huge!” The pair have qualified in two previous years, but still look forward to coming to the NEC in October. Courtney Earl and Royal Regatta took second place.
In a large class it was Glen Allen and Greylands Ace High who took the win in the Topham Barnes Small Riding Horse class, before going on to wow the judges once more in the championship to be named Riding Horse Champion. Joanna Jack and Comberton Cora followed in second.
Katie Dashwood and Minella Rebellion were hot on Glen’s heels, taking the Reserve Riding Horse Champion title after winning the Topham Barnes Large Riding Horse class. Katie Jerram-hunnable and Killmastulla Trump Card came in second behind Katie.
The Hamilton Tarmac Small Show Hunter class saw Amy Tough and Good Idea impress the judges to take the win, whilst Harriet Dennison and Ebony King were pulled into second place.
It was Vincent Seddon and Loughanboy who were victorious in the Catplant Group of Companies Ltd. Lightweight Show Hunter class. They were followed in second place by Olivia Edmondson and Double Mocha.
The Catplant Group of Companies Ltd. Middleweight Show Hunter was a very successful class, seeing the winners, Jane Ross and KBF Crescendo, go on to be crowned Hunter Champions, whilst second place, taken by Polly Coles and Bloomfield Valhalla, came away with the Reserve Champion title.
Claudine O’connor and Vision Impossible took the win in the Catplant Group of Companies Ltd. Heavyweight Show Hunter class, followed closely behind by Helen Cowley and Randalstown Regal in second place.
Arena 2
Emily Mccourt and Rathbane Legend, known as Scottie at home, had a great start to their day winning the Thor Atkinson Steel Fabrications Ltd. M&M Exc. 143cm Working Hunter Pony class. The pair made the long journey over from Ireland to come to this show, and when talking about Scottie Emily said: “my favourite thing is his personality, he is super cheeky and kind!” They will now do some showjumping until returning for HOYS in October. Second place went to Laburnum Richard, ridden by Amy Smith.
The Thor Atkinson Steel Fabrications Ltd. M&M 143cm Working Hunter Pony class saw Sally Anne Pierson take a 4-point lead to win the class, before coming back to triumph in the championship and be named M&M Working Hunter Pony Champions. Olivia Bowen and Gallant Prince came in second place.
In a busy and competitive class there were 10 clear rounds in the Thor Atkinson Steel Fabrications Ltd. M&M 133cm Working Hunter Pony, but Rachel Turner and Joint Venture just edged out the competition, taking a 2-point lead to win the class before going on to be named Reserve M&M Working Hunter Pony Champions. Carly Yates and Wellbrow Minstral followed closely behind in second.
Leanne Mitchell and Brynrodyn Darius were one of only four clears in a hotly contested Thor Atkinson Steel Fabrications Ltd. M&M 122cm Working Hunter Pony class. They took a narrow win over second place, which went to Andrea Pearman riding Pennal Sportsman.
Arena 4
Arena 4 opened this morning with The Feed Shed M&M First Ridden class, which saw Oscar Elcock and Thistledown Velvet Button beat out 15 other competitors to take the win, before going on to be crowned M&M Mini Champions. Oscar has had 13-year-old Thistledown Velvet Button since he was 5, and this is Oscar’s first time qualifying for HOYS with him, which he said has: “always been my dream to qualify with him!” Poppy Steadman and Rowfantina Trademark were only one point behind the winners and continued to impress the judges to be named Reserve M&M Lead Rein Champions.
Grace Comley, riding Coppinshill Celebrity, took an early win in a large Colne M&M Lead Rein class of 18 starters with a 3-point lead. Medi Rowles Lloyd and Heniarth Willy-Wagtail put in a lovely show to come second.
The Coloured Ridden Native/Cob/Traditional Horse sponsored by CHAPS UK/The Sankey Family was taken by Alexander Osborn riding Oxford Blue. Following only three points behind them in second was Bridie Richards and Dumbledore.
Laura Hamilton and 6-year-old Lillie Langtry II, Lillie at home, were victorious in the Coloured Ridden Non-Native Horse sponsored by CHAPS UK/Burghwallis Stud . Laura was thrilled to have qualified for HOYS and explained that: “this is the second time we have shown here, and we love it! Everybody is lovely”. When describing Lillie she said that her favourite thing is: “that she is incredibly brave, and gives everything a go.” The pair are hoping to have a few more fun shows in preparation for HOYS in October. Danni Radford and Freckleton Real Class came behind them in second.
The Coloured Ridden Non-Native Pony sponsored by CHAPS UK/Man Wah UK saw Jess Hardiman and Comberton Cirrus set themselves apart with a 4-point lead to win the class, before going on to be named Coloured Champions. This is the first year the pair have qualified for HOYS, and Jess said: “I’m really looking forward to it, it’s been a long time coming. She’s very good, I can go in any ring and she’s brilliant.” Second place was taken by Jess Pritchard and Little Miss Rhino.
In a large class of 16, Hannah Miller-burton and SD Red Gambler stood out from the crowd to win the Coloured Ridden Native/Cob/Traditional Pony sponsored by CHAPS UK/The White Crow class. SD Red Gambler is an 8-year-old stallion who Hannah purchased as an unhandled 3-year-old. Known as Donkey at home he “is good as gold! He runs out with his mares and has 3 foals on the floor and another 3 mares scanned in foal for next year.” Sarah Parker and Acresdale Betty Boop followed closely behind them in second.
Stephanie Zebedee and BC Ibn Hejaz were the winners of the Simon Constable Equine Vets and Mr & Mrs Roberts Purebred Arab Stallion class, before going on to be named Reserve Arab Champions. Known as Little Man at home, 10-year-old BC Ibn Hejaz was a home bred, where the owners had both his mum and dad. This was his first HOYS class, and they are “thoroughly looking forward to HOYS and have a couple more qualifiers lined up”. Justine Armstrong Small was pulled into second place riding Yatifa.
The Simon Constable Equine Vets and Mr & Mrs Roberts Purebred Arab Gelding class saw Sian Warman and Solitaire SR secure first place, followed by Gemma Lucas and Star Design in second.
The last class of the day in Arena 4 was the Simon Constable Equine Vets and Mr & Mrs Roberts Purebred Arab Mare, where Lucy Amy and Xquisite Dream wowed the judges to not only win the class, but go on to with the Arab Championship. Second place went to Clare Fitch riding Narva D.
